Why do people sin even though shaytan is chained in Ramadan
Many Muslims often wonder why do people continue to sin even in Ramadan.
Indeed our beloved Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah
be upon him) said: “When Ramadan begins, the gates of Paradise are opened,
and the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained up.” Narrated
by al-Bukhari, 3277; Muslim, 1079. According to al-Nasaa’i: “The most evil
jinn are chained up.”
Many Muslim scholars have tried to interpret these Hadith. The best theory put forward is that not all of the devils are chained up. Only the most evil devils are chained up. Thus the influence of evil is weakened.
It is amazing how staying away from sin and performing Islamic duties becomes so much easier in Ramadan. As a result brothers and sisters tend to perform more optional prayers, read more Quran, lower their gaze more often. Some sisters even begin to start wearing hijab. Many brothers and sisters who do not do any or very little Islamic activity outside Ramadan start to do some sort of Islamic Worship. It maybe fasting or praying Isha and tararawi prayers
I have even known brothers who do not pray regularly nor fast much in Ramadan stop at least some of the other sins they are doing completely during Ramadan such as drinking alcohol, going to night clubbing, fornicating, watching porn stops.
SubhanAllah. Glory and praise be to Allah who has given us this blessed month of Ramadan So that we can become Al-Muttaqoon (the pious)
Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“O you who believe! Observing As-Sawm (the fasting) is prescribed for
you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqoon
(the pious)” [al-Baqarah 2:183]
Although this is question of why do people sin even though the devils are chained is very interesting for me too. I believe if this question was of great importance the Sahabah would have asked the Prophet peace be upon him more about this, Or maybe they understood the Hadiths so clearly that the did not need to ask. However we should not dwell too much on this topic. But we should try and appreciate the beauty of these hadiths. Thinking about the mercy of Allah and how so many people increase in goodness and decrease in evilness. We should also realise how deprived of goodness people are who even in Ramadan do not give up that which is haram.
We should also realise that there are brothers and sisters who should be motivated and encouraged to keep up what they are doing after Ramadan to and they should be encouraged not to go back to the evil and haram things that they indulged themselves in before Ramadan.
